Interview : Sam Owino, Filmmaker And Creative Director
Sam is not just a filmmaker; he is a storyteller and a creative explorer who brings emotions, culture, and humanity to life through the lens. I am also an avid seeker of new experiences. I’ve got a bucket list that I’m determined to check off one adventure at a time. From skydiving to crashing a wedding to learning a weird skill like fire breathing. I’m always up for a challenge, you never know when these talents might come in handy!
2. What would you say is your driving factor?
My driving factor is the thrill of discovery and the pursuit of authenticity in storytelling. I believe in the power of narrative to connect people, cultures, and ideas. It’s the quest to uncover untold stories, amplify diverse voices, and reveal the beauty in the ordinary that keeps me motivated every day. My other driving factor is the fear of regret. I always tell people, “I’m more afraid of regretting what I didn’t do than failing at what I tried.”
3. What are some of the projects that you have done that you would say have been a major highlight in your career?
One of the most significant highlights in my career has been “Voices of Health.” It’s an ongoing documentary series that showcases free medical camps across various counties in Kenya. I’m proud of this project because it not only highlights the incredible work of healthcare professionals but also brings attention to important issues in our society.
4. As a child what did you aspire to be once you grew up?
As a child, I dreamt of becoming a doctor, more specifically, a neurosurgeon. However, those dreams took an unexpected turn when I had the chance to observe a surgery. Let’s just say I realized I was better suited behind the camera on set than in the operating room.
5. What would you say inspired you to join Africa Gigsters?
A collaborative community of top freelancers in Africa monetizing their skills??? Sign me up!
6. What do you like most about being a freelancer?
What I love most about freelancing is the freedom to express my creativity without boundaries. It’s about having the autonomy to choose projects that align with my passion and values. Freelancing allows me to constantly evolve and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of storytelling. And yes, sometimes I get to work in my pyjamas – the ultimate freelancer perk!
7. How would you define success?
It’s about waking up each day excited to do what you’re passionate about and constantly discovering new things in the process. It’s about the impact I create through my work. When my art touches hearts, spark conversations, or inspire positive change, that’s when I feel truly successful. It’s about finding joy in the process, occasionally sharing a laugh with your inner child and leaving a lasting legacy through storytelling.
8. For those people thinking about getting into the industry you are in, what advice would you give them?
My advice is simple:
Start!
If you have a genuine passion for this craft, don’t let doubts and excuses hold you back. Embrace the early stages, learn from your mistakes (they’ll become valuable lessons), and keep your enthusiasm burning. Hug those early hiccups and mishaps; they’re like the blooper reel of your life and trust me, they make fantastic stories at parties.
Continue pushing your boundaries, stay curious, and maintain a thirst for knowledge. I’m still learning a lot on this journey, and while I can’t predict the final destination, I love every unpredictable frame of this crazy movie right now!”
